I’m about to start my emergency medicine fellowship in two weeks. I’m very excited, but also very nervous because I haven’t seen a patient in almost 3 months!

During rotations, I felt very comfortable seeing patients. But, as I’m preparing for this fellowship, I realized I’m forgetting small things like how to get a history of present illness aka HPI.

So, today I want to go over the systematic approach I used as a physician assistant student to get an HPI in an attempt to review for myself and in hopes that you can take something away from this to better help you with patients.

Enjoy!
